About CBD What we know
Whats the difference between cannabidiol and marijuana?
CBD is the second most prevalent active ingredient of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of the marijuana plant. While CBD is one of hundreds of cannabinoids found in the Marijuana plant by itself it will not cause a “high” or “stoned” feeling. According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Evidence of CBD health benefits
Epilepsy and Seizures
CBD has been touted to help with a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), these types of epilepsy typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. There has been multiple studies showing, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases it was able to stop them altogether. Videos of the effects of CBD on these children and their seizures are readily available on the Internet for viewing. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.
Anxiety and Insomnia
CBD is also commonly used to address anxiety issues with great results, and for patients who suffer with insomnia, studies suggest that Cannabidiols can help with both falling asleep and having better quality of sleep.
Pain and Inflammation
Cannabidiol could offer an option for treating a range of chronic pains and may also help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters, thus reducing inflammatory and neuropathic pain, these are two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat.
One study in rats found that injections reduced pain response to surgical incision, while another rat study found that oral Cannabidiol treatment significantly reduced sciatic nerve pain and inflammation. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed, using an animal model, Cannabidiol applied on the skin could help reduce the pain and inflammation from arthritis. Another study showed the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, these are two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. Although more studies on humans are needed in this area to substantiate the claims of CBD and pain relief.
CBD can be used help treat many skin conditions including, acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Acne is a common skin condition that affects nearly 10% of the population. It is caused by a number of factors, including genetics, bacteria, underlying inflammation and the production of too much sebum, an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands. Based on recent scientific studies, CBD oil may help treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production. Studies have shown that CBD can prevent sebaceous glands from secreting too much sebum and prevent inflammatory cytokines(pro acne agents) from activating.
CBD when applied topically can give great relief from eczema and psoriasis, reducing the inflammation and relieving the pain. With continued use have shown reduction in swelling and redness for both psoriasis and eczema
Recent research has shown that CBD can help to lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure is linked to increased risk of a number of health conditions, including heart attack, stroke and metabolic syndrome. Studies indicate that it may be a natural and effective treatment for high blood pressure.
A recent study showed a reduction in resting blood pressure in 10 healthy men when treated with one dose of 600 mg of CBD oil, compared to a placebo oil which made no reduction. This study also gave the men stress tests that would normally increase blood pressure. However the single dose of CBD led the men to experience a far smaller increase in blood pressure than normal in response to these stress tests. Research suggests that the anxiety and stress reducing properties are what helps reduce blood pressure.
CBD can bring health and wellbeing benefits playing a role in treating many health issues, such as anxiety, acne, epilepsy, and pain relief. Research on the potential health benefits of the oil is ongoing, so new therapeutic uses for this natural remedy are sure to be discovered.
Though there is still a lot to be learned but results from many studies suggest that it may provide a safe, and natural treatment for many health issues.
